The world was conspiring against me.

My house project was almost complete, so it was non-stop work with the crew. And Luke.

With the holidays fast approaching, holiday parties were ramping up. With Luke. And Ivy.

I couldn’t escape them.

And I felt like a bitch for thinking that, since Ivy was genuinely nice. She seemed to complement Luke. I was just bitter about seeing them together because it should have been me on his arm and not her.

It was two weeks before Christmas and Preston was hosting a cookie swap at her apartment.

I’d baked Lebkuchen, a spiced Christmas cookie my dad loved, and Snickerdoodle, my mom’s favorite, for the swap. I wouldn’t be able to eat most of the cookies I’d get, but I’d give them to the crew the next day. They’d enjoy them.

I was really excited to go because I’d been sticking close to my house because of the construction finishing up. Finishes were going in soon, then I’d be able to decorate just in time for Christmas and my New Year’s Eve party.

I couldn’t wait.

I pulled into the complex Preston and Alvarez lived in, wishing they’d found a house already and that they weren’t stuck in this complex anymore.

They were getting married soon, so I knew they were ready to move on to start their family.

I pulled into a spot and grabbed my containers before carefully making my way to their apartment.

The door was open when I got there, so I pushed it open with my foot and paused just inside, my eyes widening as I took in the scene.

To the left was the dining room, and the table was laden with different containers of cookies. To my right was the kitchen, which was where Preston was.

And in front of me were the men that were connected to the women I was there to see.

I swallowed thickly, trying to get over my shock and unease at the men being there.

I put my containers down and turned toward the kitchen. Preston was grimacing my way.

“I’m sorry about not telling you the guys were here,” she whispered when I got close enough. “They were supposed to go to Frankie’s or something up in Raleigh. But at the last minute, Alvarez decided they should stick around and hang with us. I’ve been scrambling to get more food made.”

“Yikes.” I shrugged out of my jacket, throwing it over the back of a chair. “Can I help?”

“Yes, please. The others got pulled into the living room.”

I washed my hands and helped her get things pulled together.

“Why didn’t they just do something here?” I asked Preston a little while later.

She shrugged, shaking her head. “I don’t know. He’s been on this kick now that the two of us need to be working hard to save as much money as possible since we’re looking to buy.”

“I guess I can’t disagree, but one day in Raleigh isn’t going to wipe you out.”

Preston snorted. “Try telling that to him.”

“Is everyone here?” I asked a few minutes later as I slipped a tray of cheese and hard meats into the fridge.
